This doesn't seem normal to me. Does it only happen when the engine is cold? Maybe it has to sit at the dealer overnight.
I have the same set-up (2500/Hemi) and it's smoth as silk.
You might try another dealer or have your Dad test drive the truck with the mechanic going along under the same conditions that you notice the problem.

Your description sounds exactly like the infamous "clutch fan" roar so many D owners have complained about??

On the D this roaring, along with the "real" loss of approx. 20 hp to drive the clutch fan when it's engaged, made it "seem" like the transmission was slipping on the shift between 1st and 2nd gear. (i.e. it sounded like the engine was reving way too high before shifting to 2nd)

If this is what's happening, then the dealer's right?the roaring sound is normal whenever the clutch fan is engaged! This "usually" occurs when you first drive off after the engine's not had a chance to completely cool down since it was shut off or whenever it's been "real" cold outside (because the viscous fluid in the fan clutch gets thick)

    thanks for the help

its not the clutch fan. I believe it happens when it's cold or when it sit for a while after driving. he's had the mechanic ride with him and they said they fixed the problem but you can still hear it
