    Pontetial Durango Purchase

Looking at 2012 to 2015's for the wife. She wants leather, heated seats/wheel, navigation and AWD. Any reason to get the V8 over the V6 if I am not towing with it?

Mainly gonna be a family and sports equipment hauler so prefer better mileage. Any particular issues to look out for? Any reoccurring issues that I can have the dealer take care of before I purchase?

Also, would it be worth the extra $$ at this point to go with a 2015 with an 8-speed vs the older 5-speed?

Also, could i get some real world MPG numbers from both V6 and V8 owners? Any and all other advice is welcome and appreciated.

V8 over V6 if not towing?....Other than it's effortless power w/8 speed trans....no other real reason especially if FE is of more importance.
I find the V6 8-speed combo plenty peppy for everyday driving.
Now personally I would not buy 2012-2013 V6 as I found it a dog...I'd only consider the Hemi in those years.

2014 was first year of the 8-speed...and was also a mid-cycle update both inside and out and with all the updates, I would just focus on a 2014-2015 model year.

Real world V8 mileage w/2wd 17 mixed...21-23 highway depending upon your cruise speed. 12-14 city only.

You don't have a transmission option with the 2015. I have the V-6 RWD and just averaged 25mpg on a 1,200 mile trip last week and get a consistent 20mpg in mixed, stop and go, commuting. For me, the V8 isn't worth the upfront cost (~$3,500 in a Citadel) or the poorer mileage. Of course, your priorities and budget will determine what matters to you.

    Owning both a 2011 5 speed V6 and a 2014 8 speed V6.... definitely go 2014+!! As Chase said, the 11-13 V6 is a dog compared to the 8 speed..

Lots more pros wirh the 2014+ Ds... THE ONLY thing I like better about my 2011 is the front bumper.. very slight difference in the curves beneth the headligjts that I think give the bumper a little more aggressive look

We started out looking at 2011+ used durangos but quickly ruled out anything before the 14's I like the uConnect system on the 14+ much better. Averaging 16-19 mpg mixed with the V8.

Yeah, def look at only 2014+. You get the newer electronics, new 8 speed, new exterior styling, on and on.

I have the HEMI R/T AWD and I'm averaging about 17 mpg, with a lead foot!

I love my 2014 R/T. Might be my favorite car/truck/suv I've owned thus far....

8 speed may perform better when they are working properly. The 5 speed is the only thing better in the 2011. May be slower but does not jerk you around or hunt gears all day long.

I have a 2014 Limited, V-6, AWD, and love it. Best vehicle I've ever owned, and it's been all but bullet proof since I've had it. The V-6 has more than enough power to get you into trouble, especially if you aren't looking to tow. Let me tell you a little story...about a year or so ago, I took a two week road trip from Charlotte to Arizona, Utah, and environs. Durango performed like a champ - 75mph speed limits on the roads out west, and you wouldn't know you were going that fast. I was on a two-lane road in the Texas Panhandle, again 75 mph limit, behind a truck struggling to do 60. When I had a clear lane, I moved over and stood on the gas, not wanting to spend much time head on with 75mph+ traffic. I was accelerating through 90 when I got to the cab of the truck, and it just kept on going. Yes, the V-6 does well.

Absolutely! There were a number of updates in 2014 that make it even better.

What sort of problems are you having? In 82K miles over the past two and half years, the 8-speed in my D has performed flawlessly.

Thanks everyone for the information so far. Did not realize that '14 was the trans change. So will narrow the focus to 14's and newer. MPG is high on the priority list as my vehicle is a 12 Ram 1500, so want the MPG for when carrying the family. She is coming from an '11 BMW X5 which is getting mid 20's MPG with the 6 cylinder in it, but are starting to get into things starting to wear our so a $1k bill every fix is becoming the norm. Hence the search for something newer, less mechanical costs with comparable mileage.
