    AC Quit

I have a 2006 Durango 5.7ltr. A couple months ago I turned on the AC but heard a hissing sound from where passengers put their feet. I believe the system is empty so not enough PSI to kick on the compressor. Anybody know how hard it is to get to the front evaporator ? Even private garages or places like Midas want a minimum of $1200 if it's the evaporator. Other suggestions.

My 04 was doing the same thing. It would cool some, but not very well when sitting in traffic. Took it to my local garage, and the refrigerant level was about half. I would have it checked, and when they charge it they will put in some dye as well. In my case, the service was two years ago and it is still good.
Hopefully you will find out the same thing. If the leak is that small, I would have them put in a little sealer next time. A leak that small (if this is the case) is not worth the $1200 to remove dash (as required) to replace the evap.

Cross your fingers, and give it a go lol!

Took it to Sears Automotive. They inspected everything, charged the system , & put dye in. It only had 6.349313 oz in the system. I understand it takes 32oz. So it was nearly empty. So far it is cooling with a vent temperature of 44 degrees fahrenheit. Whoooooowaa !!! Let's hope she holds the charge. Thx for the help

Sears Automotive was the cheapest price to do this work. I was pleasantly surprised.

Good luck! AC is neither fun nor cheap to fix.

Oh I know. That evaporator could of been a $1200 to $2000. So far so good two days & counting. I used to run the AC on 3 or 4. Now I'm cold at fan speed 1. I'm guessing a week should prove whether there's something else going on. I have an ultraviolet light. No leaks so far. If it has a small leak in the evaporator I'll just have to wait & see.

Congrats on what I hope is a good diagnosis and repair. Mine is still cranking along almost 2 years later. I think I paid around $125 when I had mine done.
