Blue smoke on startup - 2014 Durango R/T

Noticed today when starting the "D" a big puff of blue smoke coming from the exhaust at start up. It went away after a few seconds. I think there was a TSB for this '13 Hemi Durangos. Anyone else notice this with their new 5.7???

were you parked on the level?

There was a (somewhat hokey IMHO) TSB for GCs with 5.7's that involved a change to the windage tray and a change to some valve timing magic to avoid blue smoke on startup when parked on a hill.

My '14 GC did that exactly once parked on the level, and I've been watching carefully every since and it has not happened again. I have not had the TSB done.

Sounds like oil on start-up. This could be caused by a WHOLE range of things.

Hemi idiosyncrasies. Like a Harley that "marks it's spot" with an oil drip.

Well known Catch Can solution. Done most likely thereafter.

    Just guessing.

No, wasn't parked level but on a slight incline. I let it sit for a day and tried it again no smoke that I noticed,(very wind out) but when I started driving it stuttered real bad like it was stuck in a low gear and starving for gas. (had over a half tank so it wasn't that) The exhaust seemed louder than usual too. After safely getting off the side of the road I shut the truck down, restarted it and it was fine.

Well I have a '14 RT w/ 3500 miles on it and it has been blowing smoke on start up after it sits for a few hours damn near every time I start it and every time it was either parked in my garage or perfectly level ground at work, also I am getting real bad exhaust fumes in the cabin when on the highway after passing someone then backing off the pedal. have an appt. on 6-4 with the dealer AGAIN lets see what kind of story I get this time...

Lots of ideas to go round. Sounds like shortydurango started in MDS mode? Computer reset & all was normal.
NYHunter1 Sounds like excessive ring blow by. The MOPAR CAI, is the elbow secure in the end of the air filter? All hose connections good?
Smoke on start. Engines breathing heavy? Poor break in/frequent 5,000+ RPM operation/poor ring seating. Oil fumes condensing in the manifold ( plastic, cools quickly ), eventually pooling in a pocket in the bottom. When level it is ok, park at an angle and the pocket drains into an inlet port?
    Just ideas, don't shoot me.

I hear ya Old Bear, but I was very nice to it on break in even 2 oil changes already 1st at 1000 and 2nd at 2500, every time it smokes it has been parked perfectly level thats why I would agree with the ring issue, not that I,m thrilled on having to get any of that type of work done but I like the truck and planned on having it for awhile thats why I purchased the lifetime bumper to bumper warranty and that includes a loaner every time I have to leave it so let them have at it...Thanks for the input...........

I wonder if your changing the break in oil so soon and often affected your ring seating. A thousand miles is way early. I did my first change at 6300 and my second at 11,300. No smoke and my engine doesn't burn a drop between changes, even when towing. Just a thought. Hope you get this resolved to your full satisfaction.

My gut says all this stuff about oil, breakin, etc is irrelevant.. this seems to be a pretty common problem with recent 5.7L motors, at least in this platform..
