    Alternator issue or something more?

On Friday my wife was driving and told me the battery light came on, I was out of town so I had a look at it yesterday. I started the engine and no battery light was on but the ABS, traction control and service rear parking sensors msg were all on, there was a noise coming from under the hood but before I could pop the hood and have a look the engine shut off and there was no power to anything and the key is stuck in the ignition. It ran for about 2 minutes before shutting off. On the build sheet it shows I have the 220 amp alternator, which doesn't seem to have as many issues as the 160 amp.

It's a 2011 with the original battery, so could it be the alternator not working or a bad battery or hopefully not something worse? I'm just curious way all the ABS and traction control lights would be on if it was an alternator/battery issue.

It was like a squealing noise, it wasn't extremely loud I just noticed it because it was a new noise. Thinking about it now there was a faint almost burnt odor that I noticed once I got the hood open, but by that point the engine wasn't running.

I'd check the serpentine belt and all components, (AC compressor, power steering pump, alternator), running off the belt to make sure they are spinning freely. Battery voltage should be around 14.5 with the engine running and the alternator charging properly.

I can see if the pulleys move freely or not with the belt off but from looking around the internet some more this afternoon I found many owners that had the same symptoms as we did and it was the alternator in all of them, some even had the battery and PCM destroyed by the failure or caught fire. I'm just happy that when it all shut down it was sitting in my garage and not on the road as many others have had happen with this issue.

Over $800 for the alternator alone, no labour.

I have a 147,000 mile 2011. Mid summer I had the same thing happen. The alternator is toast. I got a 225 amp replacement from O' Reilly's for $480 (with our RV shop discount).

I swapped it out in about an hour, but this is the first time I've installed an alternator by feel alone as I really couldn't see any of the fasteners. Ratcheting end wrenches are key here.

There is a YouTube video I watched before hitting it, I'll go see if I can find it.

    Over $800 for the alternator? where? Is this a V6 or a V8? worst case, MSRP for a v6 220-amp looks like $670, $560 for the v8..

V6, I'm in Canada though, so jack the price up a bit more. The place I usually get parts from can't find it in their system.

I found the video on youtube so I think I would be ok changing the alternator and battery (if needed) but if it damaged anything else I think it might be over my head.

Get the part number from the alternator that is in your rig.. let's make sure it really is what we think it is.

    I think this is the correct reman alternator for a 2011 v6 220A: https://www.thewrenchmonkey.ca/produ...DENSO/2100769/
    but you should verify..

    reman is probably fine..

rockauto.com is a good site to look up parts on..

edit: that part number checks out on the denso site.

The only numbers I can see are:

    P0480-7865AC
    421000-7050

Beside Denso name is hard to read but I think it says 46588 the last digit is kind of hard to see so I am not sure if it's an 8 or not. The Dodge build sheet with my VIN says it's a 220A alternator.
