    Shift locking

My 98 can be put in gear without apply the brake like most cars these day. It has done this since I bought it so it either never had it or it broke before I bought it. It kinda scares me because I have remote start and a boy that's growing up really fast. I usually don't let him near the truck unsupervised, but I just want to be safe rather than sorry in the evident something would happen. Was this a standard item on 98s or something that can be added. If it's standard, where should I start looking for the culprit piece or pieces. TIA

My 99 is the same way, but the ram has the "step on the barke" safety lock, It's not broken, just was never engineered in the early gen 1's.

The brake lock federal mandate applied to passenger vehicles. The Durango was based off a truck platform which the regulation didn't apply to.

your ignition switch should be off with no key, so the column lock will keep the shift lever from moving, no?

Nope. I have used the remote start and as long as you don't hit the brake you can use the gear selector. Once you hit the brake it'll kill the engine unless the key is in.

Something is wrong with the steering wheel interlock.

I never thought to try it it without the truck remote started. I'll try it once when the truck isn't started and see what the outcome is once.

Did you modify the steering column in any way when the remote start was added? If not, I agree with previous post about ignition switch. There's an interlock between the switch and the gear shift. When you turn the switch towards the run and start position a pin is released that allows the gearshift to move, when in original stock configuration. This can be broken off, often when stolen.
Hanson front bumper, Kennesaw rear bumper, Ranch9000xl's w/ remote, Detroit Locker, lots of other goodies

I did had the remote start professionally installed.
