Transfer case swap
Glad to find this forum. I was referred by a friend and former D owner who tells me this is where the real "experts" are where D's are concerned. That's encouraging, and if things go as planned, I'll soon be a D owner and will definitely want to join your organization. But whether or not I buy the D I'm looking at, depends on whether or not I can easily swap out the transfer case. Here's the situation:
I've found an '03 SXT 4.7 with only 7240 miles on the speedo, for a super low price. It's always been garaged and maintained by the book. Of course, it has the NV133 TCase, which is a downer so far as I'm concerned. My previous 4x4's have been Jeeps (4) and a Ford Bronco, all of which had the low range, which I consider essential. I've found an NV233 Tcase from a wrecked '04 Dakota (27000 miles) which I can buy for $250. The owner of the Dak says the Tcase should swap out easily with the 133 case. He's already sold the dash, so the 4wd switch is gone of course.
My question is: Has anyone here ever attempted or completed such a swap, or do you know whether it could easily be done? I.e., would the NV233 fit without an adapter, and would the wiring for the switch have to be changed? Would the dash switch be available, either OEM or aftermarket, and would there be control module issues?
I apologize if this question is redundant, and if it's, perhaps someone could direct me to any previous posts discussing this issue. I've tried the search engine, but haven't had good results.
Looking forward to becoming a member.
I believe that it should bolt right up. We had one member put in an Atlas II on his D, sticks and everything. So it should work no problem. I'd suggest putting all new shaft seals in prior to installation as a precaution. Other than that, I'd say go for it.
Be sure to take into consideration that you may have to get a new driveshaft or 2.
Mike will remember that I swapped my NV 233 out for an NV 244 in my 01 D back in Feb. of this year. That swap went very well.
I do recall in my search for a T case that the 01-03 cases were grouped together, and the 04 and up cases were a separate listing. Since the NV 133 is a two speed case, I don't know whether DC included the extra wiring in the two speed models, or saved 2¢ per car by deleting it.
I'd say that as long as the control ciruitry will work, you should be ok, but you'll want to make sure of this.
In any case, I still have my NV233 case which has 56k on it and it needs to find a new home.
Good Luck Don
Thanks guys. Sounding good so far. Don, I'll keep you in mind if the '04 won't work.
It'll go right in. I have read elsewhere that others have done this as well
sorry to enter in this thread with another question?
in my 99 shelby I have a part time transfer case? I think nv231? in the user's manual I read there are also the option of nv242 with the full time position?
I'm very interest in that, because it's more driveable in rainy day? where I have to look for that tcase? does it bolt in without mods?
will also work a jeeps unit or not? at a first look it seems the output slip is bigger than the jeep one?
thanks a lot
Ice that's a Bolt in as well!
perfect? I only have to find one?
I have the Full Time Case option. The FT case has 2wd, PT, FT, 4lo selections on the lever. I leave mine in FT. Yes it's great to have FT. There's no fishtailing in wet conditions.
What fun is driving without an occassional fishtail!!
