2001 Check engine - Torque Coverter Clutch Solenoid... help!

I just got a 2001 Dodge Durango with a 4.7 under the hood, the guy who sold it to me said the Check engine light was due to him removing the exhaust... low and behold auto zones machine says its the tcc solenoid. I have been trying to research where to start but everything seems confusing as so many things trigger this sensor. I would love to take it to a mechanic but my family is on a very tight income... we have two in diapers and one on the way. How should I began to tackle this?

I can feel the tranny shift up but it seems relatively normal, maybe a tad hard... o/d seems to work. When driving at 55 if I turn od off the Rpms go up by like a grand. Fluid looks red and when i got it, three days ago, it didnt smell burnt but now it has a bit of a bad smell... I can't seem to tell if it is down shifting, sometimes it feels strange but I don't know how to explain it.

What should I do first? I tried the trap the breaks at 60 thing? Nothing happened...

My reading of the code description is that the TCC solenoid was asked to lock up the converter (there is no P0743, which would indicate an electrical failure), but the converter didn't lock (no RPM drop on lockup).

Can you get any trans service history from the guy who sold it to you?

the question is more "how much love did he show it?" .. did he do the recommended maintenance?

doesn't sound like he ever checked the code when he was done "removing the exhaust" .. P074x never has anything to do with exhaust.

You could cross your fingers and try removing and re-seating all the connectors at the transmission.. I'm not hopeful.
