    Fan Clutch Recommendation

I recently put in a NAPA fan clutch and, while it does its job, its fully engaged for 3-4 miles every time I start it and the fan roar is too loud to hear anything else. I talked to NAPA and they said that's normal, all aftermarket clutches do that, and they wouldn't take it back. I suspect it may be a severe duty (i.e. police/taxi) unit so I'm going to get another one online (rockauto, autopartswarehouse) but I don't want to go thru this again. Can anyone point to a particular model or manufacturer that works well? I'd rather not pay dealer prices.

Also, I've heard the V10 fan is quieter. Does that equate to less airflow? If not, does someone know the part number?

No, the V-10 clutch and fan blades are designed to work at different speeds than the stock units. They're also what the factory suggested as a fix for the fan roar problem that was a "major" complaint on the 98/99 Ds. The V-10 blades are pitched at a different angle than the stock unit.

I had the same problem. The only way to solve this problem was to get one from a dealer.

If you check in the performance question area of the forum you should find the part numbers for the fan, clutch and shroud assembly used by the TSB Dodge put out for this problem.

    Bill,

I've had great service from factorymoparparts.com down in Florida. They hooked me up with a brand new HD fan clutch for my 04 to the tune of $80 shipped to my door so you might give them a try.

I put a Mopar heavy duty one in mine and it's indeed loud. I can't imagine aftermarket heavy duties being even louder. If so, I can understand why you want to swap it out.

My new OEM clutch does roar a bit for the first half a mile or so, but quiets down quickly after that. In my book, if I can put OEM back in for close to or less than aftermarket, I'll do that unless the OEM product is known for poor quality. I had heard that folks were complaining of excessive noise with aftermarket units, hence the OEM choice.

How hard is it to do this yourself? Old exchanged and maybe time to go to the junkyards, that is if not stripped out already.

    Qwassy,

Changing the fan clutch is a fairly easy job. If you look here under my Gen 2 cooling system service post, I explain how to do it and also detail how to make a home brewed tool to hold the water pump still while removing the fan assembly.
