All electric fan swap + much more

I'm going to remove the clutch fan, stocker electric fan, old radiator, shroud, coolant overflow and windshield washer tank this weekend. Also re-running the grounds to the battery with a few mods there too. I have all new parts going back in and replacement concepts for the tanks and shroud that'll stand in for the stocker stuff.

I have a brand new Taraus fan, the Flexalite VSC controller that'll be used to keep the D cool automatically.

    QUESTIONS:
    • - Any nice photos of shroud tank replacements that you guys have done?
      - I plan on grabbing 'key on power' from the fuel pump relay under the hood. Comments suggestions there?
      - With the oil and transmission coolers, any predicted issues on uncoupling them from the stocker old radiator while the replacement goes in? I hope to just pull them out of the way but not sure on the bracket connectivity.
      - Did you guys pull off the crossmember brace while doing the fan only swaps? I think it has to come off for the radiator swap.
      - Any other advise, gotchas-to-look out for?
I'm hoping to be down just Saturday via a 5-10 hour session depending on what all it takes to complete the mods. I'll be over the road testing out the setup directly via trial-by-fire with a 650 mile round tripper to Northern Ohio on Monday, followed by the next weekend a 2500 mile round trip to Florida and then two weeks later a 1300 mile round trip to Carlisle. With daily driving tossed in there, I don't have the luxury of it not working the first time out.

Thanks a million for all the advice, and assistance in advance. I'll document the swaps with photos for the forum.

Wow Rob, You're going all out!! I think you're going to enjoy the results, much cleaner look without the shroud in there. The V brace came out permanently for my fan swap and I believe the removal of the crossmember will ease your radiator swap. The tranny cooler lines will leak, but I don't foresee any difficulty with disconnection or reconnection. Of course take care not to cross thread the compression fittings that need to be used? I'm sure you've had your share of dealings with those.

Looking forward to seeing your increased MPG reports from the scheduled road trips you've got planned, Pics too!! Way cool. As far as my coolant reservoir goes, I'm using a 16" stainless catch can, and plan on using the same to run the windshield washers. For now, the hoses going to the squirters are tucked away until I figure out exactly how I'm going to set up the pumps. The second catch can will simply be mounted on the opposite side of the fan shroud, which is where the pumps and hoses are anyway. Good luck with your swap, and enjoy!!

Hey Steve, I picked up the catch can at the annual Turlock swap meet. I should have bought two of them, But I think I'll be looking for another soon. (still limited on the funds at the moment)

Here ya go, The connection at the bottom is so tight, thus far, no clamp needed. I'll put one there when I get a chance though. The hose just comes off of the upper hose stock location, and winds down to the bottom of the can. The open line comming out of the can is for overflow. The can itself is 16"L x 3" diameter.

    Gotcha. Thank you DCD!

I'm considering a little tail hose on the overflow pipe to get the liquid down and out from under the spray area if ever needed. Looks like just a piece of pipe and done.

What's the tank mounted too (photos?) From the looks of it, I have the exact tank I think.

Wait until you see my washer fluid tank I'm dealing with the cap now and tada! I think it should be awesome.

Same consideration here, just a small piece of vacuum line on the overflow tube will keep the mess off the truck. I mounted the tank to a piece of aluminum flatbar, and mounted the flatbar to the provisions on the side of the fan shroud. I'll try to stick the camera down in there for a shot of it.

Looking forward to seeing your set up, sounds like its going to be sweet!
